What is a speech team?
Speech (officially called “Individual Events”) consists of 14 different categories, each different from the others. A student on the Speech Team may be in just one event (“single-entered”) or may be in two events (“double-entered.”) Most first-year members will be single-entered.
In every category students either write or find the material they perform. In either case, coaches or varsity members help the students. They are never alone and they mostly come up with scripts only once for the whole year, and you will (for the most part) keep that script for the duration of the season (this is an exception in the events of IS, RS, and ES).
We will do what was for the best of the Speech Team when “casting.” There is a chance that changes will be made once the season officially begins.
The top three in every category are considered Varsity. Others will be considered JV or Novice. Anyone can end up on the Varsity squad, regardless of where he or she begins the season. We will seek to put together the strongest Varsity team possible from among everyone on the team. Experienced and older students are not necessarily given preference.
Every team member is expected to rehearse nightly at home. Outside practice is where real growth occurs. Team members are expected to meet with a coach each week. Those who practice the most on their own are those who will win the most – a simple formula, really. People who repeatedly show up for rehearsals without having worked on their own will be sent home and the practice will be considered to have been skipped.
To be on the Speech Team means one must rehearse at least once a week with a coach or assigned Varsity member and they must attend every team meeting.
- They are also EXPECTED to attend every contest prepared to perform.
- They are also EXPECTED to attend every Monday Meeting after school
- They are also EXPECTED that once a week, every member meets in a group rehearsal. These always occur on the Friday before tournaments. Each event will rehearse in a room with their coach.
The first competition for the 2014-2015 Speech Team Season will be Prospect’s annual Speechapalooza, held on November 15th.
There will be a MANDATORY family meeting on November 1st for students and their parents wishing to be apart of Speech Team.
The Dodge Booster Club meeting will be taking place on November 1st from 10am-2pm.
